The Best Ways To Organize A Kitchen

Food has never been more Instagrammable than right now. Everyone is guilty of taking beautiful photographs of their brunch, lunch and cheat day cakes! Food is something that everyone engages with on a daily basis. We all know how much we love to eat good food, which makes food photographs huge on Instagram — they are simple to create and relatable to everyone.

Nothing says spring quite like cleaning and organizing. And if your kitchen isn’t like the ones you see on HGTV, we get it: organizing a kitchen is far easier said than done. Even after a thorough cleaning, it seems like it’s only a matter of days before the pots and pans are askew, the tupperware is missing its tops, and expired condiments are piling up in the fridge.

If you’re looking for ways to organize your kitchen for good, and to set things up in a way where they’re simply bound to stay in order, then we’ve got you covered. Here are some of our favorite hacks and tips you can use to organize a kitchen - no matter the shape or size of your space.

What are your goals?

Before you start to organize a kitchen, you can first clarify your goals. Do you want less clutter, more ease while cooking, or a better aesthetic? You can start by outlining your struggles in the kitchen (you can never find your favorite pan, for example), and outline goals that can help you resolve those issues.

Then, it’s time to pull everything out

When you’re looking to organize a kitchen, it’s important to start from the ground up. This means you should probably take just about everything out, to see what you really have, and to understand how things are organized right now.

If you think you have a good handle on what you own, it’s quite possible you have some things you’ve forgotten about, or that you truly never use. Get this: studies estimate that we only use about 20% of the things that we own. With that in mind, when you’re starting to organize a kitchen, start by taking everything out of its shelf or cabinet, and get the lay of the land.

Grab your scrub brush

During this time, your kitchen is perfectly poised for a deep clean. Think about it: when was the last time your cabinets were truly empty? Doing a deep clean of your shelves, counters, cabinets, and even inside your fridge is a great way to ensure that your kitchen looks and feels its best. Get a great cleaning spray, grab some rags and paper towels, and give everything a thorough wipe down, before you start re-organizing.

Organize items by frequency of use

When it’s time to decide what goes where, an excellent way to organize items is by how often you use them. Rarely-used cutlery, special items (such as crystal glasses and fine china), and kitchen gadgets that aren’t in the regular rotation can get stored in high-up cabinets, inside closets, or even out of the kitchen all together.

When it comes to often-used items, choose locations that prioritize accessibility. Pots and pans should go near the stove, baking sheets within reach of the oven, and daily-use appliances (such as a toaster) and find a home on the counter.

Find creative storage solutions

Don’t forget, you don’t have to simply accept your cabinets and shelves as they are. There are plenty of creative ways you can maximize your storage in order to best organize your kitchen. For example, you can hang pots and pans by the stove with a hanging rack, use a spice rack for your favorite spices, and put dividers into drawers to keep things neat. Plus, consider standing dividers for your cutting boards and baking sheets, stackable tupperware sets, a magnetic knife holder for your knives, and hanging storage racks for the inside of pantry doors.

Take advantage of next-generation kitchen solutions

In the era of smart appliances and cooking apps, there are many ways you can make life easier in the kitchen, beyond just organizing. For example, the voice-enabled cooking app Myka is like a sous chef in your smartphone, and can record recipes while you cook, and also read them back to you. This means you’ll have free hands to focus on doing what you love: preparing delicious meals.
